Towards an Open Museum of Water Culture |
Welcome to Safina Projects' Newsletter, September 2023 Heritage Through Crafts and DesignWebinar in Arabic Wednesday 27 September, 17:00-19:00 (London, GMT+1) Location: online - book here (free of charge) Rashad Salim, artist-researcher and our founding director, will introduce our proposal for an "Open Museum of Water in the Fertile Crescent region and the Arabian Peninsula", building upon the existing Open Museum in Basra, the Iraqi Heritage Boat Clubs Network, and on research and projects across the wider region that show its interconnectedness through water and culture. Inspired by the Global Network of Water Museums which we have recently joined, we are envisioning how the landscape of water and the human heritage that depends upon it can be recognised and restored as a living museum. Fellow speakers on the topic of "Heritage Through Crafts and Design" are Nada Osman Alaeddine (Turquoise Mountain Saudi Arabia) and Sara Ouhaddou (Moroccan-French artist). The webinar is organised by the Barakat Trust in partnership with Megawra and supported by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s Education Programme. Iraqi Heritage Boat Clubs: Return to the SourceWe are delighted to welcome two new clubs to the Iraqi Heritage Boat Clubs Network:
A mini-documentary, "Iraqi Heritage Boat Clubs: Return to the Source" is coming soon, focusing on the launch of the Dukan club in July 2023 and the journeys of the marsh boatbuilders and other club members from across Iraq coming together to celebrate the waters that connect us all. Watch the trailer above! Our thanks to Waterkeepers Iraq-Kurdistan for their collaboration on this film, to the Cultural Protection Fund (British Council with DCMS) for their kind support for the growth of the Heritage Boat Clubs Network and our Ark for Iraq project, and to ALIPH Foundation for supporting the founding of the Network. |
